Optional - (6 Hours) of Cognate/Area of Emphasis

To earn a cognate, a student must take 6 hours within a program or discipline outside of Technical Communication. Cognates do not require an additional advisor and are not listed on transcripts.

Students may choose to pursue a minor. To begin a minor, students must contact an advisor from the chosen program or discipline. Minors usually require at least 9 hours of coursework. Some undergraduate or previous work in the discipline is often a prerequisite. Minors do appear on transcripts.

When taking any course offered outside of the English department, the student must have the permission of the instructor. Students need to contact the MATC graduate advisor regarding cognates or minors. Students entering the MATC program in Fall 2008 or after are not required to have a cognate or minor to complete the degree.
