Internship Track

Students who are currently working full-time or students who will be working as technical communicators typically choose the internship option.

It is important to remember that students who choose the internship track will be required to take 15 hours of Technical Communications Courses (see degree outline).

The internship class, ENG 5312, has several different sections:
  • Editing the Professional Publication (Internship): this section is typically offered as an online/RRHEC course, the Internship—or Service Learning Project—section is offered at night. Students in this section will practice the writing, editing, designing, and proofreading of a professional publication or publications. The service-learning portion of this course requires students to find an appropriate service-learning project that includes a technology component and requires writing, editing, and developing a large print and/or online document. The student becomes a "writing and editing consultant" in his/her internship and its subsequent project.
  • Editing the Professional Publication (Center for the Study of Southwest Publications): this section is offered during the day, twice a week.  Students in this section attend workshops and practice editing for a professional publication, particularly book reviews. This course also offers practical experience in selecting material and in designing and laying out journals using desktop publishing software (provided in the CSSW lab).
  • Editing the Professional Publication (Front Porch Literary Journal): this section is only open to MFA in Creative Writing students.  MATC students are not eligible to enroll in this section.
Internship classes are pass/fail.  Students will not receive a letter grade (or grade point equivalent) for this course.  Questions regarding the internship course sections should be directed to Dr. Allison.
