Admission Requirements & Deadlines

Thank you for your interest in the M.A. in Technical Communication Graduate Program.  

All applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university. A minimum of a 2.75 GPA on the last 60 undergraduate semester hours of letter-grade work earned at a four-year college or university before receipt of their Bachelor's (plus any previously completed graduate work) is required.

In addition, you must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in 12 or more hours of undergraduate English courses or writing, editing, web design, and technical communication/professional writing courses. Other courses may be approved by the MATC Graduate Advisor.

The MATC program does not require taking the GRE.

Important Deadlines

  • The application deadline for fall semester is June 15.
  • The deadline for the spring semester is November 1.
  • The deadline for the summer semester is April 15.
  • For applicants who wish to apply for an Instructional or Teaching Assistantship, the deadline is January 15 for the following academic year.

Application Process

Below you will find steps for the application process as directed by the the Graduate College.

Step 1 - Apply Texas

To begin the application process for the MATC graduate program, you will need to first visit and complete the online Graduate College application at

Please note that the Texas Common Application will ask you for a minor or cognate, but you are NOT required to obtain a minor or cognate to complete our program.  Although it will appear that you must designate a choice for minor/cogante, you may leave this section of your application blank.

In addition to the Texas Common Application, transcripts must also be sent to the Graduate College.  Please note that the MATC program does NOT handle transcripts.  More information about the Graduate College requirements, as well as other resources available to graduate students, can be found on the Graduate College website.

Applicants are also required to submit an Admission Portfolio to the Graduate College, as well as other important documents.  Information on the Admission Portfolio can be found here.

Step 2 - Activate your NetID after receiving an email with instructions

Within 24 hours from the time your Apply Texas application has arrived to the Graduate College office, you will receive an email explaining how to activate your NetID. You cannot upload your admission documents prior to receiving the email.

All admissions communications will be sent to the email address provided on the ApplyTexas application.

Step 3 - Submit your documents

Documents can be uploaded through the Graduate Admission Document Upload (GADU) tool.

Application fee payments can be submitted securely through our online portal, TouchNet, or mailed via check/money order to the address above. Please make payable to Texas State University. For more information on the application fee, see the Graduate College website.
Transcripts should be mailed to the address above or securely sent electronically by your university. Scanned or faxed copies of transcripts will not be considered official.

Step 4 - Check your status online

It can take 4-6 weeks for a program to make a recommendation on your application after it has reached a complete status. A complete status indicates that all documents have been received in The Graduate College.

Step 5 - Program Acceptance

Once the admissions process has been completed and you have received acceptance into the MATC program, you will be required to contact the MATC Program Director, Dr. Miriam Williams at for advising and degree planning.
