Admissions Portfolio Details

Professional Letter

The professional letter acts as your portfolio's formal introduction by providing background on its contents. You the letter as an opportunity to explain the reasons for creating the projects/writing samples. Give us an idea of why you wrote/designed the piece(s). If it was a collaboration, explain how you contributed to the overall project.

Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose is your opportunity to tell us who you are and what you hope to achieve with a Masters of Technical Communication.  That essay helps the faculty get a sense of who you are and what to expect from you as a Master's student.

Portfolio Contents/Review Process

Your portfolio must include a total minimum of 15 double-spaced (or 8 single-space) pages of original nonfiction writing. Appropriate content includes documents from undergraduate research papers, professional brochures, and/or copies of web pages.  The MATC Program has students ranging from fresh out of undergrad to professionals returning to school. The MATC review committee takes into consideration the individual student's background when reviewing a portfolio and veterans and non-traditional students are always welcome.

Proprietary Materials and Non-Disclosure Agreements

If your portfolio includes material from a company, business, agency, or organization, you must have written permission to include their materials in your statement of purpose.

Letters of Recommendation/Resumes

Letters of recommendation may be included, but they are not required for admission to the program.  Place them under a separate "tab" or section.  A resumé should be treated in the same fashion.

Your portfolio should be submitted directly to the Graduate College with your application. Your portfolio will be reviewed by the MATC Program faculty committee along with your other materials submitted to the Graduate College.
